Ol' Remus offers his opinions as-is, where is. He rarely cites support for his opinions so they are, in that sense, unwarranted. He comes by them largely by having lived and watched and listened rather than by argument or persuasion. His opinions, not having been arrived at by debate are, therefore, not particularly vulnerable to debate. He entertains opposing opinion but he feels no inclination, much less obligation, to discuss or defend his own. Whatever usefulness or amusement readers may find in them is their own business.

Woodpile Report is from the Hermetic School of websites. There is no advertising, no partnerships, log-ins, popups, subscriptions, print version, Disqus, feedback section, tip jar or shop. There are no trackers, cookies, LSOs, analytics or widgets. Posted links are cleansed of superfluous identifiers.

Although the sentiment warms Remus's tiny little heart, Woodpile Report has no mechanism for receiving donations or gifts, nor does he accept them by other means.

Woodpile Report does not maintain an archive. Some issues linger on the server until Remus gets around to deleting them. Don't confuse Woodpile Report with a blog. It isn't. It's an olde tymme internet site made by hand and archives are a dispensable chore.

Privacy

Here at Yer ol' Woodpile Report all incoming email is automatically detected and deleted by instantaneously disconnecting before it arrives. Taking no chances, a clever device shreds Remus's hard drive into nanosize filaments and sinters them into a bust of Chopin. Meanwhile, from a hardened and very remote location, he sends a bot that deletes said email on your end by tricking your PC into self-immolation. Other devices vaporize every ISP that handled it and beam the resulting plasma into deep space. Then he sends a strike team of armed pre-med students to administer a prefrontal lobotomy so you can't remember your own birthday much less writing him an email. Finally, all persons in your zip code with the same last name as yours are put into the witness protection program. Now that's privacy.

Where the name came from

What's with the title Woodpile Report? Well, it's this way, from January of 2004 until mid-2007 it was emailed to a subscibers list. In that form it was titled the Woodpile Weather Report. A picture of ol' Remus's woodpile appeared at the top as both a weather report and, by documenting the progression from log pile to chunkwood to a split 'n stacked woodpile, a witness to the seasonal changes. It was the thin thread from which comments hung. As thrilling as all that was, the comments metastasized and took over. But the title remains.

Tactics of the Left
Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals

Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have

Never go outside the experience of your people.

Whenever possible, go outside the experience of the enemy.

Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.

Ridicule is man's most potent weapon

A good tactic is one your people enjoy.

A tactic that drags on for too long becomes a drag.

Use different tactics and actions and use all events of the period.

The threat is more terrifying than the thing itself.

Maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.

If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.

The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.

Moscow Rules
via the International Spy Museum

Assume nothing.

Never go against your gut.

Everyone is potentially under opposition control.

Don't look back; you are never completely alone.

Go with the flow, blend in.

Vary your pattern and stay within your cover.

Lull them into a sense of complacency.

Don't harass the opposition.

Pick the time and place for action.

Keep your options open.

The Five Stages of Collapse

Financial Collapse. Faith in "business as usual" is lost.

Commercial Collapse. Faith that "the market shall provide" is lost.

Political Collapse. Faith that "the government will take care of you" is lost.

Social Collapse. Faith that "your people will take care of you" is lost.

Cultural Collapse. Faith in the goodness of humanity is lost.

The Five Rules of Propaganda
Norman Davies

Simplification: reducing all data to a single confrontation between ‘Good and Bad', ‘Friend and Foe'.

Disfiguration: discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.

Transfusion: manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one's own ends.

Unanimity: presenting one's viewpoint as if it were the unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: drawing the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star performers, by social pressure, and by ‘psychological contagion'.

Orchestration: endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.”

The Psychology of Cyber Attacks
Robert Cialdini

Principle of Liking - people tend to form trust with those they’re attracted to, both physically and emotionally

Social Proof - People are motivated more by what others do than a perceived or even quantifiable benefit

Rule of Reciprocation - Humans feel a sense of obligatory quid pro quo

Commitment & Consistency - Most people stick with their original decisions despite information that supports changing their course

Principle of Authority - Authority, whether real or perceived, elicits obedience in many people

Principle of Scarcity - People want to be included in exclusive offers and often make poor choices under pressure

. . . . .

How to prosecute anybody

Look around for "suspicious" behavior, i.e., behavior on the part of a private citizen that can be made to appear suspicious

Ruthlessly probe every element of the "suspect's" life, using the effectively infinite resources of the State, until enough "suspicious" behavior has been amassed

Assemble a huge list of charges to place before a grand jury

Present the case in such a fashion as to promote the less plausible accusations and obscure the more plausible ones, thus securing a grab-bag indictment

Offer the indicted person a plea bargain that will spare him centuries in prison and complete pauperization at the bargain price of a few years and/or a few thousand dollars.

Day of Rage Protests Across America

Frans Hals, Jester, 1624

art-remus-ident-04.jpg Hals. You gotta love him. This painting, as with most of his paintings, displays the sitter in a lively and revealing moment, quickly done with loose brushstrokes. The effect is done successfully only by painters in the very top tier. Canaletto could do it, look at the tiny figures in the far background of some of his Venetian cityscapes. Magic.

With so few brushstrokes, each one must carry considerable weight and be absolutely spot on. Not almost spot on. Absolutely spot on. This technique can be explained, it can be studied and imitated, it can be taught, but it isn't often mastered. Now and again I've seen modern artists who can do it. Others who try come close, but like racing a train to a crossing or skydiving, 'close' is the same as failure and spectacularly so. One thing rarely mentioned about Hals, his draftsmanship was first rate. Okay, let's get to this week's goings-on.

Last Thursday, a Sub-Saharan African American Person of Colour, allegedly acting alone, shot and killed four policemen and a transit officer, and wounded seven other officers and two civilians in Dallas Texas . Who didn't see this coming? Black Lives Matter, at its core, is an anti-white criminal outfit. Their threats of violence and actual violence against "whitey's police" and whites in general is standard guerilla warfare.

"Today, we live in a time when the white man will be picked off, and there's nothing he can do about it. His day is up, his time is up," warned King Noble, a radio host associated with the Black Lives Matter movement. "We will witness more executions and killing of white people and cops than we ever have before."

Only an irredeemable fool would take King up on this, but Black Lives Matter supporters saw fit to make similar statements, albeit gentrified, before and after the Dallas massacre :

Governor Dayton - Nobody should be shot and killed in Minnesota for a tail light being out of function. Would this have happened if those passengers would have been white? I don't think it would have.

Minnesota's Orlando Castile apparently identified as a Crips gang member who in 2011 wished his Twitter followers a “Merry CRIPmas and happy BLUE year !!!!!” He also fit the description of an armed robber who'd pulled off a heist at a Super USA Convenience Store four days before and about four blocks away from where a Hispanic— not white—cop named Jeronimo Yanez would shoot him dead. Despite initial reports that police had stopped—and killed—him over a broken taillight, video taken after the shooting shows that both of his taillights were working just fine.

Free Republic - Girlfriend of Philando Castile Changes Her Story. Did She Withhold Video of the Actual Shooting?

Obama - What's clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year...

AG Lynch - I want you to know that your voice is important. Do not be discouraged by those who would use your lawful actions as cover for their heinous violence. We will continue to safeguard your constitutional rights and to work with you in the difficult mission of building a better nation and a brighter future.

The usual suspects are eager for a long, bloody and self-perpetuating race war. They're safely dismissed, their agenda is known and of long standing. Less easily dismissed are honest analysts who now discuss the possibility, perhaps the probability, of race war should whites be pushed to where they engage in kind. Should this happen, a critical load-bearing member deep in the structure will have failed and there's no saving it.

More immediately, some BLM associates posit an ongoing race war and are calling for recruits. This is from Dr. Mauricelm-Lei Millere of the African American Defense League:

Vocativ - We are Calling on every gang (Crips and Bloods) and gangsta across the four corners to put in some work because these racist crackas have put themselves in your business. It's time for the Crips and Blood to shed some blood. Know what um saying!?” In another post, he encouraged people to also kill firemen because “they are on the same side” as the police.

BLM can't disown Dallas and the other assaults, or the riots, arson and looting. It reveals the game plan their words conceal. No protest is peaceful when it includes rock-throwing, shutting down public places, barricading highways, calls for murder and committing actual murder. They can't have it both ways, they blathered about "not condoning violence" then tweeted joyful solidarity with the Dallas shooter . The first black Miss Alabama, now a Miami TV host, called the shooter a martyr .

Philadelphia Mayor Kenney said, "I ask all Philadelphians not to react in hate, anger, or violence, but instead to grieve with the nation by listening to one another." How precious. How unutterably noble. Philadelphia cops see it differently however. Here's a sample:

Philadelphia Inquirer - Colarulo, a former chief inspector in the Philadelphia Police Department, called the Black Lives Matter movement a "violent, hateful organization that condones violence against police. They chant, 'Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon.' I give no credit to that organization.

Unwilling to deal with plain facts, blame-shifting began:

Daily Caller - Obama Blames Guns For Dallas Police Attack

CNN, Obama - "When it comes to the issue of gun safety, there is polarization between a very intense minority, and a majority of Americans who actually think that we could be doing better when it comes to gun safety."

When Obama blames "guns" he means "working class white Americans". When he says "gun safety" he means "working class white Americans without their guns". It's all a matter of who gets to be safe from who, hence the weasel wording. Black Lives Matter has already done one thing they set out to do, demonstrate in a public way the police can't, or won't, protect themselves, much less protect white America or anyone else. Classic guerilla operation.

Hillary's good at this too. The airport meeting between Bill Clinton and AG Lynch, the news leak, the stories about "the fix is in" and "too big to jail ", all neatly staged to convince doubters a Hillary win is inevitible. Who's going to work against her if she can arrange a fix at the AG level? Classic psyop. News media gets props for being a watchdog, Lynch gets Hillary's promise she'll keep her job and FBI chief Comey folds when it's made clear to him who his boss really listens to. One stone, many birds.

Speaking of unindicted criminal suspect Hillary Clinton, she had an extra special insight. BLM isn't to blame, the victims are to blame. She says they didn't listen enough and showed insufficient love and kindness, to wit:

CNN - I will call for white people, like myself, to put ourselves in the shoes of those African-American families who fear every time their children go somewhere ... we’re the ones who have to start listening to the legitimate cries coming from our African-American fellow citizens ... we need more love and kindness.

Newt Gingrich seconded Hillary with this inspiring homily:

The Hill - If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk. We’ve got to rethink what it means to be American and how we function together as an extended family.

The problem is quite the otherwise, we do understand being black in America. We've heard little else for decades, to the point of fatigue. Here it is: black America shouldn't be required to live by the same rules and laws as the rest of us because they, and only they, have had it tough. And if we go for too long without thinking of them, and only of them, they'll throw a bloody tantrum because nothing else and no one else matters but them. Simple, no?

As for Gingrich—spoiler alert!—in Act III, he and Hillary look deep into each other's eyes and drink from the same dipper. Fade to black, music up, roll credits.

Dallas Mayor Rawlings decanted this forgettable confection: “We as a city, we as a country, must come together and lock arms and heal the wounds we all feel." The mayor was not speaking ironically or recovering from anesthesia. Apparently he's just a moron. Sadly, he said this without being slapped by the nearest adult. Brace yourself governor, this is not going to bring the country together and—gasp!—it wasn't intended to bring us together. Poetic forbearance is for mountaintop monks. Go start a greeting card business if you can't handle the mayoring trade.

Not content with beclowning himself, Mayor Rawlings signaled BLM that racist assault is understandable and justified: "This is on my generation of leaders. It is on our watch that we have allowed this to continue to fester, that we have led the next generation down a vicious path of rhetoric and actions that pit one against the other." Which is about as close to depraved malfeasance as it gets.

But wait. There's more , we have Tet-like coordinated attacks going on:

Associated Press - A man accused of shooting indiscriminately at passing cars and police on a Tennessee highway told investigators he was angry about police violence against African-Americans, authorities said Friday. One woman died and three others, including one police officer, were injured in the rampage.

A 44-year-old mother of two was on her way to pick up papers for the morning delivery when a bullet struck her. The Bristol Herald-Courier reported that her car careened over a median and crashed through a chain link fence.

Florida Times Union - A gunman in a passing vehicle who opened fire on a police officer on patrol in Georgia will likely be charged with aggravated assault on the officer

Fox 2 St. Louis - The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has charged a 31-year old man in connection with the shooting of a Ballwin police officer. The suspect, identified as Antonio Taylor, was charged with first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Judicial Watch - The FBI issued an alert to Louisiana law enforcement agencies warning of violence against officers and planned riots... Other social media images call for purging and killing all cops in Baton Rouge on July 9 and starting a riot by the courthouse in Shreveport.

Breitbart - New Black Panthers and BlackLivesMatter activists protesting the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were arrested and weapons were confiscated Saturday evening in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

American Mirror - Agitators participating in a “Black Lives Matter” anti-police protest in Phoenix Friday ended it by throwing rocks at officers and threatening to kill them.

CNN - San Antonio police are investigating reports of shots fired at their headquarters late Saturday night, authorities said.

Fox Minneapolis - Police said officers were hurt after some protesters hurled rocks, firecrackers and at least one Molotov cocktail at them... protesters also threw bricks, glass bottles and construction rebar at the officers.

Were Black Lives Matter not sanctified and protected by DC, and by what was once a news media, it would be seen for what it is: an off-the-shelf terrorist outfit with no program other than defamation, disruption, violence and murder, and no articulated negotiating position other than dead police specifically and dead whites generally. BLM's reported collaboration with the Muslim Brotherhood suggests their movement's future has more room on the downside than on the upside. Decent black Americans have run away and hid, again, with so few exceptions they're notable for their rarity.

A page has been turned. This will not have a happy ending. Should this ramp up faster than it can be contained, look for Chicago-like stats to be replicated in "gun free" places everywhere, except it'll be brutha-on-honkey. No person of good will wants any part of this but being a bystander may not always be an option. Kumbaya isn't even a pretense any more. Have the Derbyshire Talk with your kids, or whomever.

Given events around the country, it's prudent to take recent threats by black civil rights leaders seriously— "Today, we live in a time when the white man will be picked off, and there's nothing he can do about it. His day is up, his time is up. We will witness more executions and killing of white people and cops than we ever have before". Disengage where you can. Be suspicious . Stay away from crowds.

Next item please.

It was with pleasure I saw "John Galt" over at Shenandoah, author of the much admired serial novel "The Day The Dollar Died", is publishing a new 'fictional blovel' as he calls it, entitled World War 3: “Remember the Maine”. Chapter One is now posted, here . His introduction reads:

Why this subject matter my readers might ask, and not a follow up to the economic survivalist fiction as before? Currently there is huge speculation that President Obama is doing everything in his power to tweak and provoke the Russian and Chinese dictatorships into taking offensive actions to justify a short conflict by the American regime for either profit or to stay in power. Internet speculation is rampant, conspiracy laden, and of course usually wrong. The truth though could be an uncomfortable reality for those who start such a war since we have now gone almost two full generations since a worldwide conflict of this magnitude...

The outcomes and daily conflict reports which I theorize about are not a reflection of the quality of the men or women of the U.S. military but drawn from publicly available reports about military war game scenarios and expert analysis which reflect poorly upon the leadership in Washington, D.C. Let us pray this never happens in our lifetime.

Anybody notice two of the biggest commuter railroads have all but ceased to run for the forseeable future? Metro in DC and SEPTA in Philadelphia. Why? Think of Detroit's affirmative action school system and you've got it. Example: school maintenance funds spent on iPhones and other perks and jacked up retirement bennies, then Unconscionable Tragedy when the roofs leak, so emergency funding and a bigger budget next year. Trains aren't running? Psh, walk to work. Third World practice gets Third World results.

Finally ...

While it may seem unmannerly to decline unwavering attention to the Kozmik Opry of black America, let's tear ourselves away from the all but obligatory immersion in the tedious affairs of the perpetually aggrieved long enough to attend to matters other than theirs. Our own, say.

We can do this without serious risk to our civic responsibility. President Obama, AG Lynch and DHS honcho Johnson have amply demonstrated they'll attend to the concerns of black America as their first priority. So, with our anxieties relieved, let's get to Yer ol' Woodpile Report.

The reason was simple enough, intercity highways and roads were largely paved by the end of the 'twenties, but dirt roads lingered elsewhere. Power meant getting up hills and schlepping over rough, rutted roads. In 1926 this was understood. By the 1950s the equation had changed, power meant speed and time-to-speed.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg It's official.

Town Hall - The idea of the rule of law today is a lie. There is no law. There is no justice. There are only lies. There is one law for them, and another for us. Sanctuary cities? Obama’s immigration orders? If you conservatives can play by the rules and pass your laws, then we liberals will just not enforce them. You don’t get the benefit of the laws you like. We get the benefit of the ones we do, though. Not you. Too bad, rubes. These people are so used to the good life that a society’s reflexive reliance on the principle of the rule of law brings that they think they can undermine it with impunity. Oh it’s no big deal if we do this, they reason. Everyone else will keep playing by the rules, right?

Front Page - At the center of this corruption, but hardly alone, are the criminal Clintons – the Bonnie and Clyde of American politics. We knew they could fix the Department of Justice; we suspected they could fix the FBI. What we didn’t know was that the fixes would be this transparent. The political system is corrupt and cannot clean its own house. What is needed is an outside political force that will begin the job by putting the interests of our country first again. Call it what you will – nationalism or common sense – it is the most pressing need for the country now.

Z Man - The ruling class has lost control of the reigns and they can no longer police themselves. Hillary Clinton has no business being president. It’s absurd even without the massive corruption and criminality. Even a deeply corrupt and incompetent ruling class should be able to filter out the likes of Hillary Clinton. The fact that they cannot bring themselves to flush her from the system when they have an iron clad criminal case against her is ominous. If Hillary Clinton were to become President, only fools would continue to abide by the laws. It would be a war of all against all within the ruling class and eventually, within society.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg My excerpts don't do this essay justice. This is a compact, well-reasoned overview not to be missed.

Market Ticker - There is already plenty of evidence in the public that the Clinton Foundation basically sold access to information and even secrets themselves to persons in other nations for "donations", and this is not something that happened without the knowledge of literally hundreds of people in our government, including at the highest levels, all of whom had a legal and national duty to prevent and report it. That we have a candidate for President who was not only deeply involved in this she was the architect and chief steering agent for it is beyond outrageous. There are plenty of people who believe that Obama has basically sold out America to various foreign interests, including the Muslim Brotherhood. What Hillary appears to have been involved in is not only far worse it's far more-pervasive.

Observer - The FBI sold out the Rule of Law in America. Comey’s kowtow to the partisan political interests of the Obama Administration and its powerful elitists will add to the erosion of faith in the American system and embed a bitter partisanship that will take a decade or more to bridge. I am certain he expects an angry reaction, and he should also expect sustained anger. Public trust in the federal government is near an all-time low, and Comey’s decision is a heavy blow. Elitists should prepare for sustained disrespect of laws they favor.

1939. Marfa Texas. Chuck and bedroll wagon.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg The photos were taken near Marfa, a town of 3,800 in 1939, in the high desert country of far southwest Texas. Today it's population is about 1,760. Established as Camp Marfa in 1911, it became the Marfa Army Airfield in 1942, a huge six-runway training facility for pilots of multi-engine aircraft. When the base was closed in 1947 the town of Marfa began its decline.

The chuckwagon—"chuck" was slang for food—was a mobile kitchen for cowboys on cattle drives, an innovation prompted by the post-Civil War expansion of cattle ranching into territories not served by a railroad. Chuckwagon food was of the easy to preserve kind, served from the rear of the wagon.

Alt-Market - When elitist criminals start openly admitting to their schemes it means that they are ready to pull the plug on the current system. They simply don’t care anymore who knows their plans because they think that victory is inevitable. I believe the Brexit to be a partial trigger event for a future market disaster that has been engineered for many years. That is to say, a worldwide financial calamity has been deliberately staged in advance, and the Brexit is meant to act as a scapegoat for it. Central banks will never gain public support for globally centralized policy or a global economic authority unless they are proven right and a crash does indeed take place. The crash does not necessarily need to be immediate and “total”, as some liberty movement activists assume. It is more likely to be gradual and micromanaged, though still resulting in a level of suffering in certain regions not seen since the Great Depression.

USA Watchdog - It was obvious to me that this thing had only one way to go, which is a complete collapse of everything. We’re going to need to start over. There’s too much debt. There’s too much corruption. There’s too much BS. There’s too much war. Every single industry in this world is basically hitting peak corruption, peak shadiness, peak violence and peak everything. So, it’s not just the debt or the economies that are going to collapse, it’s everything, the political establishment and the social fabric. All of these things we have been living under our entire lives will be replaced by something else. The only question is, are we going to get something better or are we going to get something worse?

Traditional Right - “Conservatives” are weak-minded, weak-willed, and weak-kneed. They have no stomach for conflict, and they break the first time someone lobs a PC-conflict epithet at them. In short, conservatives conserve nothing because they’re wimps. They spent too many decades playing the inside-the-beltway games, and they’ve become accustomed to enjoying the crumbs the progressives throw to them... The current state of affairs will not last forever, or even for a significantly long time. SJWism and other elements of the radical progressive social agenda simply cannot exist for very long. They’re too unstable and unnatural. It is part of our job as traditionalists to try to steer that inevitable collapse in the direction we want (reaction, tradition) rather than in the direction intended by the globalists and progressives (leftist totalitarianism).

White Rose - Elicitation is the process of getting someone to tell you information without them realizing they’re giving it to you. The biggest problem with it is simple: It’s getting done TO us a lot more than we’re doing it to anyone else. There are several ways to elicit information from someone, and they range from the blatantly obvious instant gratification type to the completely sneaky, long-game, over time version. You should be familiar with both–especially because the folks with the .gov after their name have all kinds of time to do it. The beauty of elicitation is that it isn’t some kind of magic. It’s simply leveraging and exploiting facets of people’s personality, and the basic things that exist in human nature.

1939. Mercedes Texas. The Midway Service Station.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg Mercedes is a small city of 16,600 on the Rio Grande in southern Texas, one county away from the Gulf of Mexico. Population in 1939 was about 7,600. The Midway Service Station no longer exists, that I can find.

NY Post - Cheating is in the lesson plan at a Brooklyn high school, where grade-fixing is so blatant, even intellectually disabled students pass rigorous state tests, faculty members charge. An 18-year-old girl with the reading skills of a kindergartner had a passing grade of 65 on the Regents US history exam. The girl scored a 73 on the algebra exam, despite calculation skills at the level of a second-grader. Alert teachers tried to thwart the cheating. But Assistant Principal Jordan Barnett slammed their “discriminatory” treatment of students and ordered them to back off. Principal Steve Dorcely, who has no teaching experience except as a substitute, pressures faculty and aides to “do whatever you can” to pass students.

Federalist - Iowa churches and church-run daycares must let males and females pee, dress, and shower next to each other, and pastors and Christians could be brought before extrajudicial tribunals if they “directly or indirectly” make “persons of any particular…gender identity” feel “unwelcome,” according to new regulations from Iowa’s Orwellian-named “Civil Rights Commission.” Simply put, this is insane. It’s totalitarian. It’s a violation of human rights and constitutional rights. It’s a repudiation of the Western system of law. People can be accused and subject to this extralegal pestilence merely upon the basis of someone else’s feelings about being “unwelcome” or “demeaned,” not any tangible harm.

Ars Technica - a group of British biologists offers a portrait of the K-T mass extinction that diverges from conventional wisdom in a couple of ways. First, their reassessment of fossil evidence shows that mammal species suffered just as much as dinosaurs during the asteroid climate disaster. And second, biodiversity returned to the planet faster than previously thought. In some areas, rich ecosystems were thriving in as little as 200 thousand years after the asteroid impact. Previous studies have estimated that it took at least a million years for diverse ecosystems to return. On each of the different palaeocontinents the recovery plays out in a broadly similar way—on each continent, mammals survived and emerged as the dominant land animals—suggests that the survival and radiation of mammals were determined by their biology, not a random event.

Cosmos - Volcanoes weakened dinosaurs while asteroid dealt knock-out blow

National Interest - The war in Ukraine has rightfully jarred military planners into reviewing effective deterrence strategies. The tried-and-true method of simply moving more troops to the front lines is no longer an effective deterrent. Many eastern Europeans appear eager and willing to volunteer to defend their homelands, with Poles again being the primary example. Militia units would be best suited for training in guerilla warfare; Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape; antivehicle measures; and reconnaissance. These skill sets would ensure that an invasion force would be extremely limited in its ability to conduct operations and resupply. Control of the border would also be paramount, and these asymmetric units would make travel across the border incredibly difficult for invaders.

Examiner - What's next for the college snowflakes? The movement they are creating now has turned into a parody of great movements of the past. Students now use racism to denounce racism. They fake hate crimes in order to "start a dialogue." They seek out racism and sexism where it doesn't really exist, simply in order to banish the views of others and frame themselves as victims worthy of attention. We may have seen an increase in campus silliness in the past year, but things are likely to get worse. They've found a way not only to make elite universities grovel and accept the ridiculous idea that they are hotbeds of racism and sexism, but they've also figured out how to make the universities pay for it. Why would the activists stop when they keep winning?

1942. Lima Ohio. M4 Sherman production line.

art-remus-ident-04.jpg Of the three locomotive builders of the steam era—Baldwin, Alco and Lima—Lima was the smallest, but with a reputation for Rolls Royce-like quality. Tank and artillery production, considered heavy manufacturing elsewhere, wasn't much more than a side job for locomotive builders, their main business continued without a hiccup.

This is one of the best photos I've seen for understanding the vertical volute spring suspension system on the M4 Sherman. Adequate spring travel was always a problem for tank designers, the cone-shaped spring was one answer. Only the US used this method. It's considered second best to the Christie "slack track" method, used most notably on the Soviet T-34, and to Christie derivatives used elsewhere.

It's last iteration went into production in 1944, being a horizontal volute spring system, a more robust arrangement allowing longer wheel travel and easier wheel replacement. Tankers were favorably impressed. In turn, this was succeeded by the torsion bar system in the post-war M46-M47 Patton and all US tanks thereafter, including the M1 Abrahms.

We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission.
Ayn Rand

Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants and debt is the money of slaves.

If, before undertaking some action, you must obtain the permission of society—you are not free, whether such permission is granted to you or not. Only a slave acts on permission. A permission is not a right.

The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.

Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.
George Orwell, 1984

. . . . .

There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.
Ayn Rand

The socialist ideal eventually goes viral, and the majority learns to game the system. Everyone is trying to live at the expense of everyone else. In the terminal phase, the failure of the system is disguised under a mountain of lies, hollow promises, and debts. When the stream of other people's money runs out, the system collapses.
Kevin Brekke

. . . . .

When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them against you … you may know that your society is doomed.
Ayn Rand

Because the regime is captive to its own lies, it must falsify everything. It falsifies the past. It falsifies the present, and it falsifies the future. It falsifies statistics ... It pretends to fear nothing. It pretends to pretend nothing.
Vaclav Havel

Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings is justice.
H. L. Mencken

We have reached a point of diminishing returns in our public life. Hardly anything actually needs doing. We may in fact be past that point; not only does nothing much need doing, but we'd benefit if much of what has been done were to be undone.
John Derbyshire

Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry.
